History of Teror

Teror is an old town with a super interesting past that goes way back to the time before the Spanish showed up in the Canary Islands. It used to be home to the Guanche people, who were the first folks living here. But then in the 15th century, the Spanish came and took over the island. That’s when Teror became a big deal in terms of religion, thanks to its patron saint, the Virgen del Pino.

Exploring Teror

A great way to see Teror is by walking around. The town isn’t too big, and most of the cool stuff is pretty close to each other. To begin your tour, head over to the Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pino, a really pretty church that’s been around since the 1700s. When you step inside, you’ll see a lovely altar and some small chapels, including one all about the Virgen del Pino.

There are more nice things to check out in Teror, like the Plaza del Teror, a cute square with colorful buildings and cozy cafes all around. It’s the perfect spot to sit back and enjoy the town’s vibe. And while you’re here, you’ve got to try some of the local treats, especially the delicious chorizo de Teror. It’s a kind of sausage made the old-school way, and it’s the best!

I like visiting the Teror’s Sunday Market, the town is quite nice.

To wrap up your visit, go for a walk in the countryside around Teror. The views of the mountains and the green forests are just amazing. Lots of people love hiking and biking in this area, and there are some cool trails and paths to check out.

Traditional Wooden Balconies

One really special thing about Teror’s buildings is their old-school balconies. They’re made of wood, and they’re all beautifully made with detailed carvings and bright, fun colors. These balconies are a big part of what makes Teror special. Back in the day, they were built to give the people living here some shade and privacy. People used to hang out on them and just watch the world go by. Nowadays, photographers and artists love these balconies, and they make Teror’s historic part look even better. When you walk around the town, you can’t miss the craftsmanship and beauty of these unique balconies. It’s like taking a trip back in time, thinking about what life was like in Teror many years ago.

Celebrating La Fiesta del Pino

The yearly pilgrimage is a really big deal in Teror. It happens every September 8th, and folks from all over Gran Canaria and even beyond come to the town to honor the Virgin Mary, who’s like the island’s special saint. La Fiesta del Pino is all about joy and color, with parades, music, dancing, and folks wearing traditional Canarian outfits. The best part is the serious religious ceremony at the Nuestra Señora del Pino church, which they deck out with flowers and candles. This pilgrimage is a mix of strong faith and culture, and it brings together people from all over, showing how much the Canarian traditions mean to them.

A least half of the appeal of Las Palmas for remote workers and digital nomads is rooted in this community. It’s the best I’ve seen so far in terms of how well it is organised, structured and nurtured. It offers excellent opportunities to meet new people and explore the island.
