Mobile phone coverage in Gran Canaria

Mobile phones and 4g modems are quite common in Gran Canaria and the four main line providers (Movistar, Vodafone, Orange and Masmovil/Yoigo) are are reliable almost everywhere.

The owner of cables and mobile phone towers is Movistar, the other operators rent the lines from this company.

For this reasons the first developer of 5G lines is Movistar while other operators will be following.

The East coast of Gran Canaria is covered by Movistar’s 5G along the GC-1 highway and the 3 main spots are Las Palmas, Telde, Vecindario and Maspalomas.

You can check the actual 3G, 4G and 5G network coverage per provider here on this map.

At the time of writing (February 2022) other providers have very limited 5G reach so those who need high mobile speeds should choose Movistar to have a bandwidth of around 1gbps.

Mogan, Playa del Cura, Playa de Tauro and Taurito are the most troublesome areas in the South in terms of signal strength and consistency due to the territory morphology and low antennas distribution.

All operators have a similar coverage and signal switches between 4G and 4G+. 3G connections might happen in the middle of the Island near Roque Nublo or towards Tamadaba.

Gran Canaria has many canyons so network coverage might suddenly drop the moment you head towards mountains where only the main roads are covered.

Please make sure to account for this aspect when hiking or going for a day at the beach in a remote location.
