The history of Italian pizza
Pizza has its origins in ancient civilizations, but it wasn’t until the 18th century that it began to resemble the pizza we know and love today. The modern pizza as we know it was first created in Naples, Italy in the late 1700s. The pizza Margherita, named after Queen Margherita of Savoy, was created by Raffaele Esposito, a pizzaiolo (pizza maker) from Naples. It featured tomatoes, mozzarella cheese and basil, which represented the colors of the Italian flag.
The Margherita quickly became popular among the working-class citizens of Naples, and soon spread throughout Italy and the rest of the world. Today, there are countless variations of pizza, but the Margherita remains a classic and beloved pizza.

What’s your favourite pizza restaurant in Maspalomas?
Pizzería Pomodoro&Mozzarella is also really good. They have a wood oven but they don’t make Neapolitan style pizza.
The pizza at Restaurante Tavolo14 is a 7/10 for me. The pizza looks very good, the high border is promising and it means excellent proofing of the dough, so no problem to digest it. But the electrical oven to cook it is a big NO for any authentic pizza. It misses the taste that only the wood oven has. Nevertheless, the ingredients are great, the tomato is super tasty and the mozzarella is good. Excellent espresso!
I recommend Rustico Pizza e Vino.
As for pizza, I really like Pizzíssima near Playa las Burras in San Agustín (close to Maspalomas). If you’re shopping at El Tablero, stop by Heladería Pizzeria Venice Ice Cream on the upper floor. They sell good ice cream too.
