Explore Pico de las Nieves: Gran Canaria’s tallest peak

Gran Canaria, one of the Spanish Canary Islands, is known for its stunning landscapes, warm climate, and rich cultural heritage. One of the island’s most iconic landmarks is Pico de las Nieves, a towering peak that rises 1,949 meters above sea level. In this blog post, we’ll take a closer look at Pico de las Nieves and explore what makes it such a special place to visit.

Getting there

Pico de las Nieves is located in the center of Gran Canaria, roughly 20 kilometers from the island’s capital city, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. There are several ways to reach the peak, including by car, bus, or on foot. If you’re driving, you can take the GC-15 road from Las Palmas to the town of Ayacata, where you’ll find a parking area near the summit. Alternatively, you can take a bus from Las Palmas to Ayacata or to the nearby village of San Mateo, and then walk or hike the rest of the way.

The view from the top

The main attraction of Pico de las Nieves is undoubtedly the stunning panoramic views that can be enjoyed from the summit. On a clear day, you can see much of Gran Canaria, including the coastline, the mountains, and the neighboring islands of Tenerife, La Gomera, and El Hierro. There’s a small observation platform at the summit that provides a great vantage point for taking in the scenery.

Hiking and trekking

For those who enjoy hiking or trekking, Pico de las Nieves is a great destination. There are several trails that lead to the summit, ranging from easy walks to more challenging treks. The most popular route starts in the town of Cruz de Tejeda and follows the GC-150 road to the summit. This hike takes around 2-3 hours and offers beautiful views of the surrounding countryside.

The Roque Nublo connection

Pico de las Nieves is also connected to another famous Gran Canaria landmark: Roque Nublo. Roque Nublo is a towering rock formation that stands at 1,813 meters above sea level, and is located about 5 kilometers southwest of Pico de las Nieves. Many visitors choose to hike from one landmark to the other, following a scenic trail that passes through pine forests, rocky terrain, and breathtaking views.

Pico de las Nieves is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Gran Canaria. Whether you’re interested in hiking, photography, or simply taking in the beauty of the island’s natural landscapes, the summit of Pico de las Nieves is a truly unforgettable experience. So why not add it to your itinerary and see for yourself what makes this landmark so special?
