Nákar: A Little Taste of the Basque in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
This isn’t just any recommendation; this is one of my all-time favourite restaurants on the island. Nákar has quietly become my go-to spot for when I want to feel properly looked after, well-fed, and just a tiny bit smug about how good my dinner choices are. Tucked a few blocks back from Las Canteras, it’s the kind of place that makes you want to keep it a secret. But obviously, I won’t.
🍷 When the north meets the island
Chef Xabier Blanco, a proud son of Navarre and graduate of the Basque Culinary Center, has created something pretty special in Nákar. It’s not flashy or fussy, but it is beautifully thought out. His menu blends the bold, rustic flavours of northern Spain with the freshness of island produce. Somehow it always feels both comforting and exciting, like a warm hug with a bit of flair.
Some of my absolute favourites:
- Mushrooms with egg yolk and crispy pork cheek. Earthy, indulgent, and wildly satisfying
- The carabinero rice is brilliant, but the rice with pork cheek is on another level
- The brioche stuffed with beef cheek and foie is one of those dishes you dream about days later
- Lamb cannelloni with truffle béchamel. Enough said
Honestly, I’ve never had a bad dish here. It’s all just that good. And yes, make sure to save room for dessert. The cheesecake is delicious, and you will regret skipping it.
🍽️ The vibe: sleek, serene, and seriously good
The space is pared-back in the best way. Soft lights, clean lines, and an open kitchen that lets you peek at the action without feeling like you’re spying. It’s elegant but relaxed, the sort of place you can wear something nice without feeling overdressed.
📍 Details to know before you go
- Where: Calle Fernando Guanarteme 10, a very doable stroll from Las Canteras
- When: Lunch from 13:45 to 17:00, dinner from 20:00 to midnight (closed Sunday and Monday)
- Booking: Definitely. It’s not a huge space, and tables fill up fast, especially on weekends
The menu changes regularly, so check their website or socials before you go to see what’s new and in season.
🍾 What to drink?
They’ve got a small but mighty wine list with excellent Spanish options, and the staff always seem to know just the thing to pair with whatever you’re eating. I’ve discovered a few new favourites here just by asking.
🌟 Final word: one of the best
If you love food that’s thoughtful, seasonal, and cooked with soul, Nákar should be on your list. It’s elegant without being stuffy, creative without being confusing, and every time I go, I leave feeling genuinely happy.
Go hungry. Order the brioche. Don’t skip the cheesecake.
