Skateboarding in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Explained

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, located on the beautiful island of Gran Canaria in Spain, offers more than just stunning beaches and vibrant culture. It’s also a great spot for skateboarders seeking the perfect blend of sunshine, sea breeze, and adrenaline. While the rules regarding skateboarding in the city may seem a bit vague, we’ve gathered some information to help you navigate the skateboarding scene in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Skateboarding Rules and Regulations

Skateboarding on the paseo, the beach promenade, is generally not allowed, just like cycling and other forms of transportation (except during the night). However, there are alternative options for skateboarding enthusiasts. The city boasts a skatepark located behind the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus (Google Maps), which provides a dedicated space for skaters to showcase their skills. It’s worth noting that there used to be another skatepark behind the AC Hotel, but it is under construction at the moment. So, if you’re looking for a designated spot to practice tricks or simply enjoy a session with fellow skaters, the skatepark near the Auditorio is your best bet.

Alternative Skateboarding Spots

Interestingly, there seems to be some leniency when it comes to skateboarding on the paseo in specific areas. According to local residents, there is a stretch close to the Auditorio where people often skate. Although it is still technically a paseo, it is not the official one, and therefore, skateboarding is allowed there. This area also serves as a gathering spot for dog walkers, further indicating its suitability for recreational activities. However, it’s always wise to exercise caution and be respectful of pedestrians while skateboarding in any public space.

The spot near the Auditorio is the best option for skateboarding and surfskating.

If you’re interested in using your skateboard for commuting purposes, you may find it acceptable in certain areas. One skater mentioned a basic skatepark near the city (Google Maps), providing a flat surface for skaters to enjoy their rides. This skatepark is a popular spot for skateboarders and inline skaters alike, with enthusiasts frequenting the park during evenings. It’s an excellent place to connect with the local skateboarding community and make new friends who share your passion for the sport.

There is a very basic skatepark behind the Auditorio, with a flat surface, there are skateboarders almost every night. Usually I go there for inline skating.

Skateboarding Permitted Areas

To clear up some confusion surrounding the rules, one person shared their conversation with a police officer. According to the officer, skateboarding is permitted on the roads where cars are driving, as long as it’s not on the sidewalks. Furthermore, if you come across signs indicating “except bicycles,” skateboarding is allowed in those areas as well. The officer mentioned that from the Auditorio to La Puntilla, a section along the beach, skateboarding is permitted during the evenings. It’s advisable to confirm the specific timings with local authorities, or exercise caution by skating during the designated hours mentioned by the police officer.

So, I just talked to a police woman who told me we can skate where the cars are driving, but not on the side walks, and when there are signs ‘except bicycles’, skates are actually allowed.

The police officer further said that by the beach, on the paseo, from the Auditorio until La Puntilla we can skate only during the evenings.

Safety and Considerations

As with any sport, it’s crucial to prioritize safety while skateboarding in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Wearing appropriate protective gear such as helmets, knee pads, and elbow pads is essential. Respecting pedestrians, fellow skaters, and local regulations will help ensure a positive and enjoyable skateboarding experience for everyone.

  • A least half of the appeal of Las Palmas for remote workers and digital nomads is rooted in this community. It’s the best I’ve seen so far in terms of how well it is organised, structured and nurtured. It offers excellent opportunities to meet new people and explore the island.
