Roque Nublo is an iconic rock formation located in the heart of Gran Canaria, and it is one of the most popular tourist attractions on the island. It’s drawing visitors from around the world to marvel at its stunning natural beauty and explore the surrounding wilderness. In this article, we will discuss what makes Roque Nublo such a special destination, how to get there, and what you can expect when hiking in the area.

What is Roque Nublo?

Roque Nublo is a volcanic rock formation that towers over the surrounding landscape, reaching a height of 80 meters (262 feet). It is located in the center of Gran Canaria and is visible from many different points on the island. The rock is estimated to be around 4.5 million years old and is a remnant of the island’s volcanic past. It is one of the most photographed landmarks on Gran Canaria and is a symbol of the island’s natural beauty.

How to get to Roque Nublo

There are a few different ways to get to Roque Nublo, depending on where you are staying on the island. If you are staying in the south of Gran Canaria, the easiest way to get there is by car. You can take the GC-1 highway towards Las Palmas and then follow the signs to Roque Nublo. The drive takes around an hour and a half and offers some stunning views of the island’s interior.

If you are staying in the north of Gran Canaria, you can take the GC-2 highway towards Las Palmas and then follow the signs to Roque Nublo. The drive takes around an hour and offers some beautiful views of the coast.

Taking the bus to Roque Nublo (from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria)

If you don’t have a car, you can also take a bus from Las Palmas to Tejeda, which is the closest town to Roque Nublo. From there, you can either hike or take a taxi to the base of the rock formation. We don’t recommend trying to get there by public transport! It will take you more than 3 hours (one way) and since buses don’t run regularly and taxis are not easy to find in the center of the island, it is easy to get stuck or make your journey even longer.

However, people have done it before:

You can get to Roque Nublo with the local bus (GuaGuas Global). It is way cheaper than renting a car. First, take bus 30 from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to Faro de Maspalomas. From there it is bus 18 to Tejeda (ask the bus driver to stop at Ayacata). From Ayacata it is a short hike to Roque Nublo. Then do the easy but beautiful hike to Tejeda (or take bus 18 back to Maspalomas). From there you can go to San Mateo (bus 305) and then back to Las Palmas (bus 303).

Hiking to Roque Nublo

One of the best ways to experience Roque Nublo is by hiking to the top of the rock formation. There are different hiking routes to choose from, ranging in difficulty from easy to challenging. The most popular route is the one that starts from the base of the rock and takes around an hour and a half to complete.

The trail is well-marked and offers some stunning views of the surrounding countryside. You will pass through pine forests and rocky terrain before reaching the base of the rock. From there, you will need to scramble up the side of the rock to reach the summit. The climb can be challenging, but the views from the top are well worth the effort.

If you are an experienced hiker, there are also several other routes that you can take to reach Roque Nublo. Some of these routes are more challenging and require a higher level of fitness and experience. Make sure to bring plenty of water and wear sturdy shoes when hiking in the area.

Other things to do near Roque Nublo

In addition to hiking to Roque Nublo, there are plenty of other things to see and do in the area. Tejeda, the closest town to the rock formation, is known for its charming streets, traditional architecture, and stunning views. You can also visit the nearby Cruz de Tejeda, which is a popular viewpoint that offers panoramic views of the island.
