Are you living in Gran Canaria and looking for car insurance? Navigating the Spanish insurance market can be challenging, but fear not โ we’ve gathered some firsthand experiences and important information that can help you make an informed decision.
Linea Directa
Debora had a positive experience (November 2023) with Linea Directa for her car insurance needs. She appreciated the ease of initiating contact online, noting that Linea Directa accepted a non-Spanish phone number and promptly arranged a call. Moreover, their English-speaking representatives efficiently sorted out her documentation. Debora was especially pleased with the quick access to her documents through their online portal and the timely receipt of physical paperwork at her address. Additionally, she found their pricing reasonable, particularly as a first-time Spanish car insurance customer. She was pleasantly surprised that Linea Directa did not require a no-claim bonus and trusted her word, assigning her to the top insurance class.

Qualitas
Florencia, on the other hand, opted for Qualitas for her car insurance (October 2023), choosing it over other providers such as Mutua Madrileรฑa, Balumba, and Liberty. Her decision was primarily based on affordability, as she found the other options to be prohibitively expensive for her first-time car insurance needs.

Allianz
Laszlo suggested checking out Allianz for car insurance. Allianz offers a variety of insurance products, including car insurance. However, it’s important to note that more specific details regarding car insurance coverage and customer experiences would need to be further explored when considering Allianz as a viable option.

Navigating the Spanish Insurance Market
When transitioning into the Spanish insurance world, it’s vital to consider several factors. It’s essential to find an insurance company that not only offers competitive pricing but also provides good customer service and support, especially for non-Spanish speakers.
When considering car insurance providers in Gran Canaria, it’s crucial to ensure that they offer English-speaking customer service, quick and efficient handling of documentation, and clear communication regarding policy details and claims processes. Third-party reviews and experiences, like the ones shared by Debora, Florencia, and Laszlo, can provide valuable insights into the strengths and weaknesses of different insurance companies.
In addition to private insurers like Linea Directa, Qualitas, and Allianz, you may want to explore other options such as Mutua Madrileรฑa and Balumba to get a comprehensive understanding of the offerings available in the region.
Ultimately the choice of a car insurance provider in Gran Canaria should be driven by the need for reliable coverage, affordability, and the ability to ensure smooth and hassle-free experiences, especially in the event of a claim.

They have more than 43,000 medical professionals and 1,150 medical centres across Spain, as well as access to digital health services and travel assistance abroad. Adeslas also provides dental insurance with discounts and financing options for dental treatments.
Iโm using Adeslas for health and dental care. Their app is amazing to book an appointment online wherever in Spain. You can opt for how many years but the minimum is a year. I find it more affordable than Sanitas, but with the same benefits, Sanitas charged me almost โฌ900/ year but Adeslas charged me โฌ586 / year (Complete Plan including dental care).
I’m with Adeslas and pretty happy with their service and they do have a English option.
Adeslas go is probably the cheapest one in the market. The downside of this health insurance is that you have to pay about โฌ10 each time you visit the doctor.
Sanitas
Sanitas is a health insurance company that offers different plans and services in Spain and Switzerland. They provide basic insurance that covers essential medical care, as well as supplementary insurance that covers additional costs and benefits. This can include dental treatment, glasses, alternative medicine and preventive care. Sanitas also offers supplementary hospital insurance that allows customers to choose the hospital ward, the doctor and the hospital they prefer, both in Switzerland and abroad.
I chose Sanitas for private health insurance.ย Mostly because it is popular and easy to find healthcare providers and hospitals that work with it.
I pay โฌ554 per year (age 54 with no previous conditions). This price comes with a “copago” (a few euros which I have to pay each time, on an increasing scale depending on the number of times I use it in the year). They do have higher prices for lower or zero copago, but I wanted the lowest price with the highest copago (which is still low anyway) because I am in very good health.
HPS is definitely covered, I have been there several times! I’m not sure about Vithas as it’s never come up in my searches (on the Sanitas site/app).
I have always done everything in Spanish but the Sanitas site offers the choice of 3 languages: Spanish, Catalan and English, so I guess this means that they offer some service in English.
I pay approximately โฌ45 a month with Sanitas and got a lot of specialists checks done already all covered. It also includes basic dental care and optician.
I use Sanitas and it includes dental care. I pay approximately โฌ800 for one year, but I’m sure there are cheaper options out there.
Iโve had Sanitas for almost a year now, they seem good so far.
DKV
If you are looking for private health insurance in Spain, you might want to consider DKV as your provider. DKV has more than 51,000 medical professionals and 1,000 medical centres available throughout the country, as well as online consultations and support. DKV also provides health insurance certificates for visa and residency applications in Spain, with a fast and easy online sign up process.
DKV have been great so far. I am very happy with them.
We used DKV before and it worked quite well. Plus they had a global coverage for up to 6 month, i.e. we could go somewhere for a summer and still use it there. At the same time we do not have anything to compare with. I remember that all of DKV apps were somewhat useless and we looked up doctors using paper book they gave us.
I use Alan – and they use DKV.

AXA is good.
DKV, it’s pretty easy to understand the contracts. Also Mapfre and Allianz are quite big here.
I would say that Mapfre or Sanitas are the best.
