Charging Your Electric Car in Gran Canaria: A Simple Guide for Stress-Free Driving

If you are driving an electric car in Gran Canaria, you are already winning. Short distances, great weather, and plenty of beautiful roads make this island perfect for EV life. The only thing you really need is a good plan for where to charge. Luckily, Gran Canaria has an expanding network of stations, and you can check all of them through Electromaps, which keeps an updated map of chargers on the island.

🔌 Where to Find Charging Stations

Electromaps has the most complete overview of charging stations in Gran Canaria. It shows locations across the entire island, including Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Telde, Arguineguín, Maspalomas and even in more rural areas.

You can filter by:

Charging speed
Connector type
Real time availability
User reviews

This is the link to the full map: https://www.electromaps.com/en/charging-stations/spain/las-palmas

It will be your best friend if you ever find yourself at 7 percent battery and whispering encouragement to your car.

🚗 Charging in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

If you are staying or living in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, charging is fairly easy. You will find stations near Las Canteras, around Mesa y López, inside shopping centres and in several private car parks.

Tip from people who learned the hard way: avoid driving to beachside chargers on a sunny Sunday. Traffic plus beach crowds equals stress levels nobody needs.

🛣️ Charging Along the GC 1

If you do the classic north to south trip, you will find several chargers along the GC 1 motorway. They are usually located near petrol stations, commercial zones and shopping areas like Telde and Vecindario.

This makes it easy to top up before continuing to Maspalomas or Meloneras for the weekend.

🌴 Charging in the South

Tourist areas in the south have improved a lot in recent years. You can now charge in Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés, Meloneras and Puerto Rico without too much trouble.

These chargers are often placed near shopping centres or public car parks. They are ideal if you want to leave your car charging while you go for a swim or a long lunch. Just keep in mind that weekends can get busy.

🏘️ Rural and Mountain Charging

If you plan to explore Agaete, Teror, Tejeda or the central mountains, plan ahead. Rural chargers exist but they are more spread out.

Electromaps is essential for these trips. Check availability before driving into the island’s centre, especially in the late afternoon.

⚡ Charging Speeds Explained Simply

Here is a quick explanation without going into technical details.

Slow AC charging
Common in residential buildings or hotels. Best for overnight stays.

Semi fast AC charging
Found in shopping centres and public parking areas. Good for topping up while running errands.

Fast DC charging
Located in busier areas and along the GC 1. Perfect for a quick 30 to 60 minute stop.

Ultra fast DC charging
Still rare on the island but slowly increasing. These give you the quickest boost.

💡 Local Tips for EV Drivers

Check user comments on Electromaps to avoid broken chargers.
Have charging apps ready such as Iberdrola, Endesa X or Wenea.
Do not wait until your battery is below 10 percent.
If a parking spot is taken by a petrol car, breathe deeply and try another station.
Plan ahead for mountain routes.

☀️ Final Plug In

Driving an electric car in Gran Canaria is smooth, easy and much cheaper than filling a tank. With short distances and a growing number of public chargers, you can explore the entire island without worries.

Electromaps will be your most reliable guide, so keep it handy and start planning your next drive. If you notice new stations or changes in availability, feel free to let me know so this guide stays updated for everyone.

Enjoy the road and happy charging.

A least half of the appeal of Las Palmas for remote workers and digital nomads is rooted in this community. It’s the best I’ve seen so far in terms of how well it is organised, structured and nurtured. It offers excellent opportunities to meet new people and explore the island.
