In the Canary Islands, the different beach flags serve as important indicators of swimming conditions, safety, and environmental quality. Here is a list of the flags with an explanation of what they mean:

  1. Green Flag
The green flag is the most favorable condition for beachgoers. It signifies that it is safe to swim in the water. There are minimal to no dangerous currents, and the waves are mild. While the flag is green, it’s still important to exercise caution, listen to lifeguards, and keep a close eye on children.
  2. Yellow Flag
A yellow flag indicates caution. Swimmers should be aware of potentially high surf, dangerous currents, and undertows. While swimming is generally permitted, it is crucial to exercise caution. Swim only in areas monitored by lifeguards and heed their warnings.
  3. Orange Flag
The orange flag indicates the absence (or limited availability) of lifeguard services at a beach, reminding beachgoers to exercise extra caution, be self-aware, and take responsibility for their safety.
  4. Red Flag
The red flag is the most serious warning for beachgoers. It indicates that swimming is not allowed due to dangerous conditions such as strong currents, high waves, or other hazardous situations. It may also imply the absence of lifeguards and supervision, so it is strongly advised not to enter the water when the red flag is raised. Exercise extra caution in these situations.
  5. Purple Flag/ White Flag with (Purple) Jellyfish
The purple flag serves as a warning sign for the presence of jellyfish or dangerous marine life. Swimmers should exercise caution and maintain a safe distance from these potentially hazardous creatures. Some species of jellyfish can deliver painful stings or be dangerous due to their venom.
  6. Black Flag
The black flag is often used to indicate that a beach is closed due to contamination or other health hazards. Swimmers should avoid the water at all costs when a black flag is present. This flag is a warning about potential health risks associated with water quality.
  7. Blue Flag
The blue flag is a symbol of high-quality beach conditions. It indicates that the beach meets certain environmental standards, including clean and safe facilities, good water quality, and environmentally conscious practices. While it doesn’t directly relate to swimming conditions, a blue flag beach offers a top-notch beach experience.

These colored flags are essential for the safety and well-being of beachgoers in the Canary Islands, and it is crucial to pay attention to them and follow the instructions of lifeguards to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience on the beaches.

  • A least half of the appeal of Las Palmas for remote workers and digital nomads is rooted in this community. It’s the best I’ve seen so far in terms of how well it is organised, structured and nurtured. It offers excellent opportunities to meet new people and explore the island.
