Budget-Friendly Bites in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria: Where to Eat Well Without Breaking the Bank

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria may be an island paradise, but that doesn’t mean you have to splash out like a cruise ship passenger at every meal. Whether you’re solo travelling, living on remote worker funds, or just love a good bargain (who doesn’t?), the city has plenty of local gems where flavour meets frugality. Here’s where to eat well, for less — with a little character on the side.

🍫 Churrería Astrid: Big Churros, Small Prices

Let’s kick things off with a classic: Churrería Astrid. Tucked into everyday city life with zero pretence and a whole lot of dough, this place is famous for its porras — big, fluffy churros that are practically a local breakfast rite of passage. Dunk them into a thick cup of melted chocolate and you’re living like a true canario, all for pocket change.

Tip: It gets busy in the mornings with locals fuelling up before work. If you don’t want to queue, come mid-morning for a second breakfast.

🐷 Bodegón Pachichi: Loud, Local, and Legendary

There’s nothing fancy about Pachichi — and that’s exactly the point. This noisy little bar is a local legend, beloved for its meaty tapas, €10 bottles of wine, and all-around chaotic charm. Highlights include the fiery chorizo infierno (served flaming), papas arrugadas with mojo, and almogrote — a cheese spread with enough garlic to keep your table safe from vampires.

Warning: It’s small, it’s loud, and it’s almost always full. Come early or book ahead. Not ideal for vegetarians, but a carnivore’s dream.

🧀 Bar Astrid: Bocadillo Goals

Different from the churro spot mentioned earlier (yep, Astrid is apparently a popular name for bars), this casual corner café serves a bocadillo con pata asada, queso tierno y alioli that deserves a slow clap. Juicy roast pork, melty cheese, and garlicky sauce all packed into crusty Canarian bread — it’s budget perfection.

Ideal for: A quick, cheap, satisfying lunch with no fuss and maximum flavour.

🧡 Pincho J: Tapas by the Sea, a Favourite

If you want to eat like a local without spending like a tourist, make your way to Pincho J. Right on the promenade near Las Canteras, this no-frills spot serves up ridiculously tasty tapas on baguette slices (pinchos!) for the price of a coffee and a smile. You won’t find menus or fancy plating here — just friendly staff, a counter full of tempting bites, and a relaxed seaside vibe that makes it perfect for a spontaneous aperò or casual dinner.

🐙 Ñoño El Chico: Tapas with a View

Right on the Paseo de Las Canteras, Ñoño El Chico is one of those places that always seems to have a buzz. It’s popular for a reason: cheap, cheerful tapas and a cracking Sunday paella if you time it right. The location means you can enjoy your meal with a sea breeze and some solid people-watching.

Pro tip: Grab a spot, order a few tapas and a cold caña, and live your best budget beach life.

🏞️ Bonus: Cave Restaurants in Barranco de Guayadeque

If you’re up for a mini adventure (and a bigger meal), head out to Barranco de Guayadeque for one of the cave restaurants carved right into the rock. The prices are still reasonable, and the setting is unmatched. Think rustic, hearty Canarian food in a location that feels straight out of a fantasy novel.

Menu staples include gofio, goat stew, and wrinkled potatoes. You might spend a bit more here, but the experience is worth every cent.

💡 Final Forkful

You don’t need deep pockets to eat well in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria — just a little local know-how and an empty stomach. From sizzling sausages in boisterous bodegones to fresh churros dipped in chocolate, these budget-friendly bites prove that some of the best meals in the city come wrapped in wax paper, served with a side of noise, and enjoyed shoulder-to-shoulder with the locals.

Happy munching — and save some alioli for the rest of us.

  • Amazing community, I had never seen such a well organized and resourceful space in any other country where I lived before, excellent go-to platform when first arriving in the island, either for short term stay or longer term plans. Thanks Nelly for offering such an incredible space 🙂

A least half of the appeal of Las Palmas for remote workers and digital nomads is rooted in this community. It’s the best I’ve seen so far in terms of how well it is organised, structured and nurtured. It offers excellent opportunities to meet new people and explore the island.
