Barranco de las Vacas: A Colourful Canyon Tucked into Gran Canaria’s Southeast

Gran Canaria is full of surprises, and one of its most photogenic is hiding just off a quiet mountain road near Agüimes. Barranco de las Vacas, often called the island’s mini Antelope Canyon, is a short but striking slot canyon carved into layers of volcanic tuff. It’s a favourite among photographers and geology fans, but it’s still small and delicate, so timing your visit right makes all the difference.

📍 What Is Barranco de las Vacas?

Despite the name, you won’t find any cows here. Barranco de las Vacas is a narrow ravine shaped by centuries of water erosion. Its most famous section, known as Las Tobas de Colores, features smooth, wave-like walls in shades of orange, pink, and beige. The colours shift with the light, especially in the early morning or late afternoon, creating a magical, otherworldly feel.

The canyon is only about 50 metres long. Its layered rock and soft curves make it a natural work of art. It’s a peaceful spot if you catch it at the right time.

🗺️ How to Get There

Barranco de las Vacas is located along the GC-550 road between Agüimes and Temisas, in the southeast of Gran Canaria.

By car:

  • From Las Palmas de Gran Canaria: about 45 to 50 minutes
  • From Maspalomas: around 30 to 40 minutes

Look for kilometre marker 14 on the GC-550. You’ll see a small stone bridge and a tunnel beneath it. That’s your landmark.

By bus:

Take a guagua to Cruce de Arinaga, then transfer to Line 34 heading toward Temisas. Get off at the Cruce de Corralillos stop (number 37002). From there, it’s about a 3 km walk to the canyon.

🚗 Parking and Access

Parking is extremely limited. There’s space for just two or three cars near the bridge. A larger lay-by about 300 metres away can fit four to five cars. From there, you’ll need to walk along the roadside to reach the canyon. Be cautious, as the road is narrow and winding.

The trail to the canyon is short, just a few minutes, but it can be slippery in spots. Wear sturdy shoes and watch your step.

⏰ When to Visit

  • Best light: Early morning or late afternoon, when the sun is low and the colours pop
  • Avoiding crowds: Weekdays are quieter. Weekends and midday can be busy with visitors lining up for photos

🧭 Tips for Your Visit

  • Footwear: Wear trainers or hiking shoes. The path is short but uneven
  • Water: Bring your own, as there are no facilities nearby
  • Leave no trace: This is a fragile environment. Don’t climb the walls or leave rubbish behind
  • Safety: Don’t leave valuables visible in your car, and be mindful of traffic when walking along the road

🌄 Nearby Attractions

  • Agüimes Old Town: A charming village with colourful streets and traditional Canarian architecture
  • Barranco de Guayadeque: A larger ravine nearby, known for its cave dwellings and restaurants carved into the rock
  • Temisas: A picturesque village famous for its olive groves and observatory

🧳 Why Go?

Barranco de las Vacas is a unique geological gem that offers a glimpse into the island’s volcanic past. Its compact size makes it a perfect stop on a day trip exploring southeastern Gran Canaria. Just remember, it’s a delicate site, so tread lightly and enjoy the natural beauty responsibly.

A least half of the appeal of Las Palmas for remote workers and digital nomads is rooted in this community. It’s the best I’ve seen so far in terms of how well it is organised, structured and nurtured. It offers excellent opportunities to meet new people and explore the island.
