However, even in this paradise, there’s one unwelcome visitor that can turn your blissful abode into a nightmare: the notorious cockroach. These resilient pests are a common household problem, especially in tropical climates like Gran Canaria. But fear not! In this article, we will explore community recommendations for dealing with a cockroach infestation and ensuring that your island retreat remains a pest-free haven. From prevention to practical tips, we’ve gathered insights from fellow islanders to help you say goodbye to unwanted roommates and reclaim your home on this beautiful island.

Cockroach gel
Cockroach gel is a highly effective pest control product designed to combat infestations of cockroaches. It consists of a gel-like substance containing a powerful insecticide, typically fipronil or a similar chemical. Cockroach gel is strategically applied in small, discreet quantities along the paths and hiding spots of cockroaches, attracting the pests with its appealing scent. Once consumed or touched, the gel proves lethal to the insects, either by ingestion or through contact, ultimately eradicating the cockroach population by disrupting their breeding and foraging activities. Its ease of use, long-lasting residual effects, and targeted application make cockroach gel a popular choice for pest control professionals and homeowners seeking a reliable solution to rid their spaces of these resilient and unsanitary pests.
Cockroach gel works very well. I use it in combination with the spray, which I use around windows and doors to prevent them coming in. It lasts around a year but you can reapply earlier.
Buy cockroach gel and put that in cracks and crevices. Then the next morning you should have dead cockroaches all over the place. Continue cleaning that up and after a few days you should be cockroach free. I used the one from Bayer, but any brand will probably do. Cockroach gel works every time; the cockroaches love the scent of it and they’ll eat that up every time. It’s a cheap solution. and you can take the gel with you when you move out.
Cockroach Spray
Cockroach spray typically comes in a pressurized aerosol can and contains active ingredients such as pyrethroids or other chemical compounds known for their effectiveness in killing and repelling cockroaches. Cockroach sprays are designed for direct application to cockroach-infested areas, allowing users to target the pests with precision. When sprayed, the fine mist or stream of insecticide quickly immobilizes or kills cockroaches on contact, while some sprays may leave a residual barrier to deter future infestations. This user-friendly and versatile solution is a popular choice for quick, on-the-spot control of cockroach populations in homes, businesses, and other settings.
We used Cucal Insecticida Aerosol Instant contra Cucarachas, Hormigas y sus nidos (we bought it at Hiperdino), it works quite well. After a couple of days we didn’t see any cockroaches anymore (only a very few dead ones). This spray was recommended from our landlady who said they spray it once every few months and that’s the way they solve the problem all year long. You don’t have to spray on the cockroaches directly; as soon as they get in touch with the spray on the ground when they walk by it works and they die.
Calling An Exterminator
Fumigating your house by a professional exterminator to combat a cockroach infestation is a comprehensive and highly effective pest control method. The process typically begins with a thorough inspection to identify the extent of the infestation and the hiding spots of the cockroaches. Once the targeted areas are determined, the exterminator employs specialized equipment to disperse a potent insecticidal gas, often a pesticide with a broad spectrum of action. This gas infiltrates even the most hard-to-reach areas, such as wall voids and crawlspaces, where cockroaches may be harboring. Fumigation is a powerful solution to eliminate all life stages of cockroaches, including eggs, nymphs, and adults. While it’s a more intrusive and costly method than some alternatives, it ensures the complete eradication of the infestation and provides longer-term protection against future outbreaks. Residents must vacate the premises temporarily during fumigation for safety reasons, but it’s a highly efficient way to achieve a cockroach-free living environment.
I had a cockroach invasion at home, and the landlord called an exterminator to fumigate the house.
The best option is to call an expert. They’re extremely effective and prevent new ones coming. My mom had an expert fumigate and what they do is they leave their product in all the right places and it lasts for over a year. During that time, any cockcroach coming from outside, the neighbour or wherever dies when it gets in contact with the product. I haven’t seen any for years in my mom’s place.
Prevention
Cockroach prevention measures are essential for maintaining a clean and sanitary living or working environment. To thwart these resilient pests, it’s crucial to start with good sanitation practices. Regularly clean and disinfect kitchens and other potential roach-attracting areas, sealing food in airtight containers and promptly cleaning up crumbs and spills. Minimize clutter and maintain a clutter-free living space, as cockroaches thrive in hidden, undisturbed areas. Seal cracks and crevices in walls, floors, and windows, as these can serve as entry points for roaches. Fix any leaks and reduce excess moisture, as cockroaches are drawn to water sources. Additionally, consider using cockroach traps and repellents as part of your prevention strategy. Regular inspections by pest control professionals can help catch early signs of infestation and apply preventive treatments when necessary, ensuring a cockroach-free environment.
What nobody talked about is prevention: no matter how much product you use, if there’s always breadcrumbs and stuff in your kitchen, they will get attracted. In my previous apartments I’ve always had cockroaches, but since I live alone and put everything in glass bottles, I’ve never seen any.
